Positivity was a pretty foreign concept to me a few months earlier. The pain I felt from my disorder had taken over my life and I didn't think anything was right in my life. Now that I have been actively fighting my OCD, positivity plays a huge role in my treatment.
Today I went on a field trip to a local homeless shelter for my Positive Psychology class. We went around helping out at the shelter and then we did random acts of kindness all around Kalamazoo. It felt so amazing to help people when they needed it most. This made me think of how people came to my rescue when I felt so low. When you have that support in your life, you can truly do anything. Being able to show people love and support by cleaning bathrooms and organizing clothes at the shelter brought me so much joy. Positive emotion helps your overall happiness tremendously.
In the afternoon my group and I passed out flowers to random people and gave them uplifting notes. Just seeing the smiles on the people's faces after we gave them a flower instantly made me feel on top of the world. Even when people walked away from us when we tried to give them a flower, we brushed it off and smiled as we tried to bring joy into the next person's life. When you are positive and helpful toward others, your own happiness and well-being increases.
This class and my own positive attitude in general has helped me with my battle with OCD. It makes me happier and much more hopeful. Ever since I began practicing positivity, my life has become more enjoyable. It takes a lot of practice to have a positive mindset, but it's very possible. The more positive thoughts you have and the more acts of kindness you do for other people, the more happiness you will experience in your own life. Practicing gratitude can also increase your happiness. Take the time each day to write out three new things you are thankful for and why you are thankful for them. This brings more feelings of fulfillment and thankfulness into your life, which in turn increases your overall well-being.
Try to incorporate more positivity into your world to make your own life more enjoyable. It has helped me tremendously by making me love life so much more. Even when my OCD challenges me and makes me doubt myself, I turn to positive thinking to try to bring down the level of panic I am experiencing. OCD may make my life difficult, but I feel as though life is worth living because of the amount of good I have found in life. Life is so much more meaningful when you have a positive and healthy outlook on it.
