As I am sitting at home cuddling with my cat and settling in for the night, I am going over this crazy year in my mind. I have gone from feeling worthless, depressed, and severely anxious to feeling confident, beautiful, and limitless. I can do anything.
My experience with OCD has inspired me to want to help others with mental illness. That is why I decided to go into social work. Mental health and helping others are my passions. My mission in life is to give hope to the hopeless and bring joy to the joyless. I am so excited to live out my dream and to do it while spreading awareness about the importance of mental health.
Why is mental health such an important cause? Well, people in today's society put a huge emphasis on physical health. Mental health is on the back burner of the mind. No one seems to realize that without mental health, there isn't physical health. They go hand in hand. Mental illness can cause physical problems, such as stomach aches, head aches, or chest pains, that are extremely uncomfortable. Mental health needs to be a priority in today's society so that today's citizens are happier and healthier. That starts with knowing all you can. Talk to someone who has a mental disorder, read an article from a psychology study on mental illness, or take a course in psychology. The more knowledge you have, the more you can help spread awareness.
I can only hope that one day we will live in a world where people aren't judged by their mental illnesses and that there is adequate treatment available to everyone that needs it. I truly believe that anyone is capable of successful mental health treatment and that everyone deserves it. No one should have to suffer in silence just because mental health has yet to be recognized as an important component to health insurance. Help this cause and spread awareness. It only takes one person to speak up and show interest to make a difference whether it be big or small.
